Accountant helped run Gulish Villa

11/23/2003

Geri Gulish, who brought music and dancing back to the Gulish Villa when she helped her father run the venerable Jerusalem Township venue in the 1970's and 1980's, died of cancer yesterday in St. Charles Mercy Hospital.  She was 52.

Ms. Gulish's condition was diagnosed in April.  She was able to return to her job as a clerk at the Meijer store in Northwood, where she worked for about a decade, her sister Laraine Meinke said.

Ms. Gulish and her then-husband, Bob Kovesdi, went into business at the Villa with her father, William Gulish, after the death of her mother, Geraldine A. Gulish, in 1976.

Her parents began the business in the 1930's as a tavern with music and dancing.  It was known for its Gulburger, a hamburger simmered in chicken broth seasoned with parsley, garlic, and paprika.  The menu later included chicken paprikas and pigs in a blanket.

The music and dancing had ended more than a decade before Ms. Gulish took a role in the business.  She revived the tradition - live music, ballroom dancing, polkas.

"It was Geri's idea," her sister said.  "The regular bar business was very slow.  If [she and Mr. Kovesdi] were to go into business with him, they wanted to have more to do.  They admired what my parents did earlier."

Ms. Gulish, an accountant, did the bookkeeping and the ordering.  She occasionally cooked and waited tables.  She made pickles and peppers, as her mother had.

"She liked working and being busy, and she liked being around people," her sister said.

Her father died Oct. 20, 1990.  The business was sold several years later.

Ms. Gulish, of Jerusalem Township, was a graduate of Clay High School.  She received a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Toledo.  She was a nature lover, had several cats at a time, and wouldn't turn away an animal in need.

"She liked to take walks," her sister said.  "She was very quiet, so it was hard for people to get to know her.  But she was a very generous person.  She gave to just about every charity there was, even if it was just a little bit."

Surviving are her brothers, Dr. Eugene and William Gulish, Jr., and sisters, Jascquelyn "Susie" Busch and Laraine Meinke.

Rest in peace Geri...
